During the Phase II alterations Henslowe documents a payment of 11 shillings for ‘payntinge my stage,’ which perhaps refers to decoration for the frons scenae rather than merely the stage boards. As in Phase I, the model follows Ronayne’s suggestion that the stage boards may have been painted green (terre vert) to represent the earth’s surface.304
